Katy Perry Knows How To Sell Perfume

Mexico is mostly famous for its lawless government and a bountiful supply of date rape drugs, it’s a forced-penetration powder-keg just waiting to explode, so it wasn’t the best idea in the world for Katy Perry to wear this awesomely slutty outfit while promoting her perfume “Purr” in Mexico City this weekend. Actually it wasn’t a good idea to go there in any outfit.

When Toys Turn Creepy

hen kids are little, they often imagine their toys coming to life. Dolls are meant to bring a certain comfort to kids, but some people develop a fear of dolls, mannequins or stuffed toys. Pediophobia has been exploited in pop culture where the previously “innocent” doll becomes a killer. Then there is a fear of clowns called coulrophobia when clowns seem only evil or creepy. Around Halloween, what is scary or creepy to one person can be cute or cool to another.

Olivia Wilde Is Single

Olivia Wilde has separated from her husband, an Italian prince, after 8 years of marriage. People reports: "It's over for Olivia Wilde and her husband Tao Ruspoli. The House M.D. actress and her husband have mutually agreed to separate after eight years of marriage, PEOPLE has learned. "They have been living apart after trying for quite some time to make their relationship work," says a source. Wilde, 26, eloped with Ruspoli, 35, an Italian prince whose family owns Rome's Palazzo Ruspoli, when she 18 years old." She's single, but I'm not sure how the next guy can follow "an Italian prince whose family owns...". Even her jump off would have to be Bruce Wayne for anybody to say what she's doing makes any kind of sense.

De Zeelandbrug

A series of photo's from "De Zeelandbrug". Repeating and dissolving into nothing is the central issue in this series. In a few photos I used a ND110 filter to make the shutter speed a lot longer to create the desired effect.

PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES TECHNOLOGY & OTHER NEAT STUFF

VW’s 261-MPG Plug-In Hybrid Arrives in 2013

Volkswagen says the 261-mpg diesel-electric XL1 concept could see limited — very limited — production within two years. The Germans unveiled the super-efficient Volkswagen XL1 at the Qatar auto show today, showcasing some of its most forward-thinking technology with a promise to offer the car in small numbers. “We want to go into series production with this car starting in 2013,” VW Chairman Ferdinand Piëch told Automotive News Europe. VW boss Martin Winterkorn said the car will be offered in Germany first, then throughout Europe. The United States and China “will follow at a later date,” he said. We’ve heard this before, of course. The XL1 is the most practical and refined of the company’s 1-liter cars, so named because the goal was to develop a car capable of traveling 100 kilometers on a liter of fuel (roughly 235 mpg). It is the third iteration of a project launched in 2002.

Bringing Science to Bike Sharing

Bike sharing is increasingly popular in Europe, and it’s making inroads here in the United States. The idea is simple — grab a bike when you need one and return it when your done. It’s not quite so simple in execution, even when you look beyond the problems with theft and vandalism experienced by programs in Paris but, oddly, not in America. Bike sharing has been adopted at some 400 locations worldwide. Madison, Wisconsin embraced it just last week, and Google just donated $25,000 to help Boulder, Colorado, start a program. Despite the mounting popularity, there have been some glitches. In some cases, riders haven’t been able to return the bikes to the station closest to their destination because it was full. Other stations occasionally experience shortages, frustrating commuters.

Four-cylinder Engines Power 65.4% Of Cars Built In 2010

Back in 2008, soaring gas prices sent car buyers in search of efficient four-cylinder vehicles and, as the numbers show, sales of V6 and V8 engines dropped from 63.9 percent to 57.1 percent when gas prices spiked. Though elevated fuel costs may have triggered the increased demand for four-cylinder power a few years ago, the numbers show that the four-banger's rise to dominance continues. According to data posted by Ward's Auto, the V8 engine powered a mere 20.8 percent of the total North American light-vehicle output in 2010, down from the 22.8 percent in 2009. In contrast, the four-cylinder engine powered 64.5 percent of all cars built in 2010, an increase from the 61.9 percent in 2009. Ward's chalks up the rising popularity of the once-lowly four-banger to technical improvements, such as direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing systems, that have transformed some four-cylinder engines into potent mills that consume significantly less fuel than many V6 and V8 engines.

Stem Cell Shooting Gun Heals Massive Burns In Days

Treating serious burns is a time consuming process that normally takes weeks or months, leaving patients open to dangerous infections as they heal. This newly-developed stem cell shooting spray gun reduces healing time to days. Warning: Graphic video inside. Most of the damage from serious burns doesn't come from flames. It comes from infections brought on by a lack of protection due to damaged skin. The lengthy healing process associated with major burns can leave patients open to such infections for months, even with proper care and wound dressing. Doctor Jörg Gerlach of the University of Pittsburgh's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine has created a method that has patients regenerating new skin in days using stem cells. Now before everyone flies off the handle, these aren't the embryonic stem cells that have been so controversial over the past decade. These are skin stem cells harvested from the patient themselves; adult stem cells.
