Planet RadomeThey look as if they might be home to families of extra-terrestrials recently arrived on earth from some sort of galactic cataclysm – and they are everywhere and increasing in number. Yet there is no need to call in the air force just yet if you spot one of these on your travels. Your average radome may look like it is from a science fiction novel but its real purpose is much more down to earth: it is a kind of umbrella. |
Brooklyn Decker. Bikinis. Why Brooklyn Decker didn't make the cover of the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is a mystery, but some conspiracy theorists say it's because God knows that she's a Tarheel fan. It's a well known fact in NC that Tarheel fans torture animals and sell children into slavery, yet the biased liberal media refuses to bring these atrocities to light. Tell me, biased liberal media, why is that? |
Project Neon!A project to document the best of New York City's neon signs. Part one began with a short walk on the centennial of neon signage. Happy birthday, neon! Later in the spring I'll start taking day shots and maybe including those signs that are no longer lit. Follow a girl as she follows the glow in search of New York's best neon signs. Every week I'll visit another of New York City's neon-clad establishments and post a photo & story, and tell you more about why I'm traipsing around this metropolis in the cold & dark to visit pharmacies, shoe repair stores, and bars with good neon signs to buy cough syrup, get my shoes repaired or just have a drink. |

Tail Fins Rising And Harley EarlIt's important to note, or set up ahead of time, that many of Harley Earl's detractors tried to dethrone the sheer magnitude and success of his innovative tail fin design that swept through an entire nation of car buyers during the 1950s. Fins were an ebullient expression of devil may careness, the hoisting of a flag to honor America and a hope of better days ahead. They were splendidly outrageous, impractical and most people loved having them rest on the back ends of their cars. It's likely if you did a national poll today you'd probably find out that many Americans still feel this way! Why, because unlike any other innovative idea used over the last 60 years of auto making to sell millions of cars, this one concept was a bold and adventurous strategy that really has no equal. |
Navy Laser Will Blast Through 2,000 Feet Of Steel By 2020The Office of Naval Research has been working away on a suite of futuristic weapons, but it's hard to think of anything that could out-gun its free-electron laser, which by the mid 2020s, should be capable of slicing straight through 2,000 feet of steel every second. The U.S. Navy has been working on directed energy weapons for years now, and for good reason: warships are the ideal platform for a powerful laser, at least initially, since they've got both the space and the power that weapons-grade laser systems require. These first lasers (to be deployed within the next decade) are likely to be traditional solid-state lasers that fire coherent beams of light, kinda like laser pointers. But unlike (most) laser pointers, these ones will be in the hundreds of kilowatts range, easily capable of blowing stuff up. |
Astra 8x6s fly In For Swiss Tunnel Excavation DutiesConstruction of a new pumped-storage power plant at Nant de Drance in the Swiss Canton of Valais called for a fleet of tough excavator trucks, so the construction consortium opted for a fleet Astra HD8 480 hp, 8x6, 48 tonne trucks fitted with Allison 4700R fully automatic transmissions. But there was a problem. The only access to the construction site, 2,000 metres above sea level, is via cable railway or helicopter so all the machinery used for the tunnel operations has to be transported using a heavy duty cable railway. Excavators, heavy equipment and the aptly named Astra HD8 trucks are thus 'flown' to the site, with the panorama of the Swiss Alps in the background. |
World’S 2nd Deadliest Poison, In An Aquarium Store Near YouIn 2007, a man from Woodbridge, Virginia was rushed into hospital after inhaling an aerosolised version of one of the deadliest poisons on the planet. He was not the victim of a terrorist attack. He wasn’t working in a biohazard laboratory. He was trying to clean out his fish tank. The man, who posts on the Reef Central Forums as Steveoutlaw, was trying to get rid of a colony of zoanthids – a relative of corals and sea anemones – that was infesting his aquarium rocks. He had heard that boiling water would do the trick. When he tried it, he accidentally inhaled some of the steam. Twenty minutes later, his nose was running and he had a cough. Four hours later, his breathing was laboured and he was headed to the emergency room. By the time he arrived, he was suffering from severe coughing fits and chest pains. He was stabilised, but he developed asthma and a persistent cough, and had to use steroids and an inhaler for at least two months. |
