It’s nice to see that former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell is doing her part for Haiti…. By walking down a runway for at least fifty seconds. Here she is during rehearsal for her appearance at some lame fashion show to raise funds for the Haitian earthquake victims. Couldn’t she just donate some of her Spice Girl millions? Anyhow, I kinda think she looks hot, but that could just be because I’ve had a few drinks and older birds look better after a few pops. Enjoy.

Outnumbered and outgunned, Taliban fighters are mounting a tougher fight than expected in Marjah, Afghan officials said Sunday, as U.S.-led forces converged on a pocket of militants in a western section of the town. With fighter jets, drones and attack helicopters roaring overhead, Marine and Afghan companies advanced on a 2-square-mile (5.2-sq. kilometer) area where more than 40 insurgents were believed holed up. “They are squeezed,” said Lt. Col. Brian Christmas, commander of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment. “It looks like they want to stay and fight but they can always drop their weapons and slip away. That’s the nature of this war.”

Chevrolet rolls out Caprice Police Car

Late last year, General Motors announced that it would build a Zeta-based Police Car for North American duty. Though there was already a perfectly good Pontiac G8 available before GM decided to shutter the brand, this Zeta would be based on the longer version of that platform as used by the Holden Statesman and be known as the 2011 Chevrolet Caprice police patrol vehicle. Well, what do you know. Chevy brought just such a vehicle to the Chicago Auto Show, and we managed to snap off a series of photos to share. According to the personnel manning the booth, the Caprice PPV is still in concept form, complete with a refurbished Toughbook panel from Panasonic attached to the center console.

GDC Awards Honor John Carmack's Lifetime Achievement

id Software co-founder and one of the fathers of the first-person shooter, John Carmack is being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards. John Carmack has been pushing video game technology past its limits for more than two decades, pioneering real-time 3D graphics, creating and honing countless game development techniques, and looking beyond the constraints of hardware. Instead of wondering what he can do within the constraints given, Carmack is the sort of guy who immediately begins looking for ways to break out of those constraints. And yes, he helped create one of the greatest games of all time - Commander Keen. Doom was pretty good too.

The Oshkosh M-ATV Is Friggin' HUGE

The Oshkosh M-ATV is the shiny new toy in the US military's wheeled vehicle fleet, just trickling into Afghanistan now to replace up-armored Humvees. We just got our first look at the thing and it's staggeringly huge in every way. The M-ATV is the next-gen armored personnel and light transport carrier designed for maximum survivability in IED attacks and through rough terrain. Oshkosh will be building $1.05B worth of these things and as taxpaying citizens let us be the first to say, holy crap are they awesome. Imagine a vehicle the size of a dump truck with a blast force dissipating hull, laminated glass, 46 inch tall tires, a cargo box so high it has a fold down ladder to get to, suspension coils thicker than a fifty cent piece and a big scoopful of good old American badass. We want one for grocery store runs.

Olympic Timing a High-tech Affair

Less than a century ago, the timing of downhill skiing required someone at the top and bottom of the run, each with a stopwatch synchronized to the time of day. Every few skiers, the timer at the top would send down a piece of paper with the start times of the last few skiers and then some math would ensue, eventually resulting in the time of the run being calculated. Oh, how things have changed. Not only is everything electronic, of course, but the sensors are often tied to the athletes themselves. In speedskating, racers wear a transponder that can measure not only start and finish times, but also determine other things, such as acceleration in and out of a turn. On the slopes, it is the skier's knees passing through a "snowgate" that creates a contact, instantly sending an impulse to triggers the start of the electronic timing.
