The Spiders That Decorate Their Own Webs

Spider webs – possibly the most beautiful and intricate animal structures of the natural world. However, some spiders are not content with a simple web. They go one step further. Some spiders decorate their own webs with even more elaborate and complex patterns than are necessary. Could they be the best exterior designers on the planet? Certainly from the look of these examples, they would be in the competition but the verdict is still out as to why they produce these extra web configurations. Some scientists argue that it is nothing more than ’spidey’ aesthetics. Take a look at some of these arachnid designs and come to your own conclusions.

Audrina Patridge’s Boyfriend Got Arrested, She’s In A Bikini

Audrina Patridge‘s on again/off again boyfriend, Corey Bohan, found himself getting arrested over the weekend for being a drunken mess. While all this was going down she was busy celebrating her 26th birthday in a bikini in Las Vegas. Corey was arrested near Hermosa Beach early Friday morning and then charged with a misdemeanor he was then released on $500 bail about eight hours later. The couple broke up back in March but they were spotted together on Thursday having a picnic at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, following the arrest she Tweeted “I absolutely hate what Jack Daniels does to people. After all of this Audrina traveled to Las Vegas to celebrate her 26th birthday at Wet Republic and as you can see she seemed to enjoy herself while posing in a bikini the whole time.

The Sky Blue Mushroom

It looks like it could be something offered to Alice just before she makes a journey in to Wonderland but this sky blue mushroom is not a product of the imagination of Lewis Caroll. It can be found on both islands of New Zealand – and bizarrely enough in a few places in India. The sky blue mushroom does not have a common name other than, well, sky blue mushroom but if you have a moment for a real tongue twister its scientific name is Entoloma hochstetteri. It gets its very distinctive blue color from pigments within the body of the fruit known as azulene. Azulene is found in nature as a constituent not only of pigments in mushrooms but of some marine invertebrates. The mushroom appeared briefly along with five other native fungi on a set of stamps issued by the New Zealand government in 2002 and it can also be seen on the reverse of the country’s $50 note which was released in 1990. Outside of New Zealand, however, and people seem blissfully unaware of the existence of this incredible blue mushroom.

PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES TECHNOLOGY & OTHER NEAT STUFF

Spy Shots: 2014 BMW i8

The 2014 BMW i8, based on the 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics concept, has been spotted in winter testing near the arctic circle. While the car is still more than two years away from production, work on the car's powertrain is already underway. The exterior of the car still looks almost identical to the concept version, though it will certainly get updates to bring it in line with production standards and other i-branded vehicles. Current specs on the car include a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine mated to a hybrid system driving all four wheels for a total of 328 horsepower. Once in production, the i8 is expected to switch to a gasoline engine, however, and to have more than three cylinders. It's not clear whether the prototype testing in these photos is powered by a diesel or a prototype for the production system. Pricing for the i8 is expected to nudge the $200,000 mark, and performance and equipment will justify the price tag--for those that can afford it.

Lego PC 1.0

The entire casing is made of LEGO bricks, there isn't a single screw, or soldering, or glue. It's completely deconstructable. The fan is blocked by 4 silicon fan mounts, which also provide vibration absorption. All the hardware components are blocked, once it's closed there isn't a single piece free to move (except for the fans).

Toyota Unveils Its Global Vision, Pledges 10 New Electrified Cars By 2015

Toyota's getting serious with this plural Prius stuff. If you still don't buy that Prii is the correct term you'd better hurry up and get over it, as the company just announced its "Toyota Global Vision," including a plan to launch 10 more hybrid vehicles by 2015. Surely that counts the new models unveiled in Detroit, the taller Prius V and the funkier Prius C, but it remains to be seen exactly what else the company will use to build up those numbers. Toyota also says that more fuel cell and fully electric cars are coming, along with numerous "genuinely exciting models," so maybe if we're really good over the next four years one of those Prii will actually be fun to drive.

Cutest Quadcopter Ever Sounds Like a Swarm of Angry Bees

Instead of calling CrazyFlie (as it's known) a tiny quadcopter, it might be more accurate to just describe it as a PCB that happens to also be able to launch itself into the air. Measuring a scant 10 centimeters per side, CrazyFlie uses its PCB as a primary structural component, which helps keep the size and weight to a minimum... In total, we're talking about only 20 grams. Despite its tinyness, the quadcopter includes a charging port, radio, 3-axis accelerometer, two gyroscopes, and a lightweight 110 mAh LiPO battery that gives it about four and a half minutes of flying time. All of the data from the accelerometer and gyros is being used to keep the copter dynamically stable, making minuscule adjustments 250 times every second using the onboard CPU. And it seems to work pretty well: for such a little platform, CrazyFlie seems remarkably stable.
