JWoww’s Body Screams WowwI want to be physically repulsed by people on “Jersey Shore” but it just doesn’t come so easy when I see JWoww. I’m sure she’s a horrible, horrible person, but the fact remains that she’s quite hot and she doesn’t look like a dwarf alien (read: Snooki). Maybe I could save her from the show and we could live together. Near a pasture. |
Yareta –Alien Life in the Andes? There is something green and alien looking, growing in South America. On first inspection you might think that it is some extraterrestrial species, using the remote grasslands of the continent to establish a foothold on planet Earth. Yet however alien this looks, this green mass of cells has its origins very much on this world. This is Yareta. Also known as Llareta in Spanish it is found in only a handful of countries – Chile, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia and grows at altitudes of between 3200 and 4500 meters – below these heights and you will simply not find the plant. It looks huge but is in fact a colony of thousands of tiny individual flowering plants in the Apiaceae family, formally classified as Azorella compacta. |
Jennifer Garner, Spread Eagle, Leather Boots, and a Movie I’ll See Despite Russell BrandIt's so very hard to find sexy pictures of the sweetly hot Jennifer Garner, who has fled into mom jean country with a Pinkberry cup in one hand and a bottle of Purell® in the other. We have to settle for accidental butt-crack shots (nice) and accidental down-top photos (double nice), but, we've been waiting for some of the better moments that made us first fall in lust with Jennifer Garner. If these promotional shots are any indication, it looks like the remake of the movie Arthur may just provide the ticket for a few Garnerific moments. Granted, you're going to have to sit through a whole lot of Russell Brand displaying the grand thespianic range of a Lou Costello, still, bathroom breaks were invented for just such actors. And, when you return from the latrine, there shall be Jennifer Garner, in some kind of PG-13 semi-hotness. I think it's a decent tradeoff, but, we shall see. |
A Gallery Of Demolition Derby PicturesIf there’s one event that’s highly underrated it’s most certainly the Monster Truck rallies. I mean you get a class of people you simply won’t experience anywhere. Actually, you experience them all over the place. I just happen to be from a big city so I have no idea what the hell I’m talking about. Put it this way though. It’s an event. In fact that’s an understatement. A very close second would be Demolition Derbies. Nothing’s better than crappy cars smashing into each other. |

Mini John Cooper Works Coupe EnduranceMotor sport is in the MINI genes. And now the carmaker is set to add a new chapter to its racing heritage with the arrival of the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance. The newly developed racer will line up at the 2011 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit. With the participation of the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance, the Nürburgring 24-hour race will be staging an automotive world premiere for the first time in its history. At the same time, the extreme demands of the classic endurance event ensure the new MINI model will be given a baptism of fire. MINI's declared aim in entering the Nürburgring 24-hour race is to experience the adventure of the "Green Hell", as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife is affectionately known. And the brand has called, among other things, on the experience gained over many years of MINI Challenge sprint racing in the development of its new racing car for this unique event. |
The Incredible Benefits of Animal TherapyHumans and animals share an ancient history of co-dependence, but this relationship extends far beyond domestication for food and labor purposes. The medical field, for example, utilized leeches and maggots for centuries, if not millennia. More modern times see a broader selection of animals helping their human partners through many different permanent and temporary conditions. Such admirable creatures as well as those taking the time to train them for the good of mankind rightfully deserve however many accolades people can give. |
Five Ethanol Myths, BustedThe United States consumes nearly one-quarter of the world’s petroleum production, yet contains a small fraction of its reserves. As other countries’ economies grow, the appetite for this finite energy source increases, placing greater pressure on the resource itself and the environment at large. With inflation and higher energy costs consuming an ever-larger portion of our budget, the need for additional energy sources grows. We must develop a multitude of alternatives to address our future energy needs. One such alternative is ethanol, which is domestically generated and sustainable. However, there are many myths surrounding ethanol, and I’ve come across a lot of them in my work at Argonne National Laboratory. I’m a mechanical engineer in the lab’s Transportation Technology R&D Center, so I’ve spent a lot of time researching ethanol. |
Spreading Lionfish Invasion Threatens BahamasIn 1992, Hurricane Andrew smashed an aquarium tank in Florida. About a half-dozen spiny, venomous lionfish washed into the Atlantic Ocean, spawning an invasion that could kill off local industry along with the native fish. People come to the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas to kayak between tiny, uninhabited islands and dive in the shallow, turquoise water. Above the water, the landscape looks like a pristine tropical paradise. But the same isn't true beneath the waves. "In 2005, the first lionfish showed up, and we didn't pay much attention to it," says Oregon State University zoology professor Mark Hixon, who has studied reef fish here for almost two decades. "The next year, we saw a few more. Then in 2007 there was a population explosion. There were so many lionfish around that they were eating the fish we were studying, and we had to start studying the lionfish. There was nothing else to do." |
