The Incredible Things NASA Did to Train Apollo Astronauts

On the anniversary of the first man on the moon, and with the final space shuttle mission set to end Thursday, Wired.com takes a look back at the extraordinary amount of training astronauts go through before they are mission ready. Apollo astronauts practiced every second of their mission, even planting the flag (above), many times, indoors, outdoors, in space suits, underwater, in planes, in centrifuges, in pools, in the ocean and anywhere else NASA saw fit. They were prepared for every contingency and trained for water planned landings as well as desert and jungle survival in case their capsule missed the ocean and hit land. They learned geology, how to withstand g-forces, maneuver in low- and zero-gravity conditions, and how to drive electric rovers and land the lunar module. Instead the perfect - and top secret - combination of water treatment, temperature, pressure is used to ensure a perfect finish. The Dubai based car wash, named Monza Ultimate Detailing and Protection, is particularly popular with car loving British expats living in the Gulf Kingdom.

How The Brain Can Be Trained To Erase Embarrassing Memories

Selective memory really exists and people can train their minds to erase embarrassing moments from their mind, according to scientists. Repressing bad memories for long enough can lead to us forgetting them completely, researchers claim. Scientists used EEG scans to monitor the parts of the brain that became active when volunteers actively tried to forget something. They were also able to pinpoint the exact moment a memory is 'forgotten', and claim that long-term suppression of a memory is a sure-fire way of permanently erasing it. A team from Lund University in Sweden said that mastering the technique could be useful for people who suffer from depression or post traumatic stress disorder, where constantly dwelling on upsetting or traumatic memories has a devastating effect on mental health.

Oddest-Named New-Car Features

Automakers not only strive to develop new gizmos and gadgets to capture the hearts and minds of new-car buyers, they love to create intriguing names for what are otherwise relatively mundane components. As introduced on the 1941 Chrysler Imperial, power windows were dubbed as being “Hydro-Electric,” while the car’s optional automatic transmission was called the “Vacamatic.” In the 1960’s, Oldsmobiles didn’t come powered by mere V8 engines – they were “Rocket 88s.” Buick’s once offered a “Super Sonomatic” car radio, and later designated its bump-absorbing suspension “Dynaride.” That sort of oddball naming convention lives on in the 21st Century, with high-tech-sounding suffixes like “–tronic” and “–matic” continuing to abound and confound, particularly among upscale automakers to help their cars seem more, well, special.

We don’t live in a vacuum. Neither do our gadgets. From steamy bathrooms to grubby, sweaty hands, little bits of moisture tend to creep into our electronics. Enter the Bheestie, an airtight plastic pouch that sucks — in a good way. It holds two smaller, porous bags that contain several peppercorn-sized pellets. In theory, these bags act like molecular sieves, absorbing moisture that’s managed to get inside your device. But it does say reviving a phone dropped in the toilet isn’t out of the question. We started by stuffing a damp sponge into the bag and were impressed by how much water came running out only an hour later. So we decided to go big.
