122 Brilliant and Blinding Blow Outs

99.99% of our photography falls within a certain acceptable range of exposure—one filled with color and detail. Last week's Shooting Challenge was dedicated to the rare .01% that's blinded by the light. The resulting shots are incredible.

11 Famous Ladies Who Rocked Arm Pit Hair

Who among us hasn’t, at some point in our adult lives, forgotten to shave our pits and discovered the oversight at an inopportune moment? Luckily, most of us are not celebrities in front of photographers who get giddy about using the high-powered zoom on their overpriced cameras. Case in point: Hilary Swank, who walked the red carpet this week wearing a gorgeous gold dress ... and some major armpit hair. Unfortunately, there is nothing that will detract from an actress starring in a great movie—like the neuvo Erin Brockovich true-life tale “Conviction”—faster than pit hair.

Recent scenes from Indonesia

The leg of a patient is chained to a post at the Galuh foundation for people with mental health conditions on February 10, 2010 in Bekasi, Indonesia. Belief in black magic is commonplace in Indonesia, where there is much ignorance over mental health issues, with traditional healers instead consulted for apparent sufferers. 2007 figures suggested that 4.6% of the nation suffered from serious mental disorders in a country whose population now stands at around 230 million, with only around 700 psychiatrists across 48 psychiatric hospitals available to help treat those affected.

How To Convert Your Diesel to Run on Vegetable Oil

We first looked at waste vegetable oil (WVO) conversions in March 2004, when we wrote about Justin Carven and his kits (www.greasecar.com). We recently bought a used 1996 Ford E-350 ambulance for a future project and decided to find out how hard it is to install a Greasecar kit. Carven counseled against trying to convert a van because its cramped engine compartment makes it ill-suited for accommodating his kit’s hardware (other companies make more van-friendly conversions). We went ahead anyway, as it promised to be a good way to test our sampling of ratcheting wrenches, which we found to cut down on skinned knuckles and toiling time. To make a diesel vehicle able to cope with WVO, you essentially install a parallel fuel system with hardware that is resistant to the specific corrosive qualities of vegetable oil. This system also needs to be heated to keep the oil’s viscosity low. Here’s the basic procedure, although some applications might require extra parts or steps.

Cool Conference Room Table Made From LEGO Blocks

Who says conference rooms have to be serious and doll places for long business discussions? Sure, the talk can last for hours, but how about changing the way a room of this kind feels? This is perhaps what designers over at Abgc had in mind when creating this cool conference room table for advertising agency Boys and Girls. The brief suggested that the table should be “playful, but not juvenile” and also contained a quote by Charles Mingus which states: “making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” With this two elements at hand, Abgc came up with the LEGO boardroom table, a very creative idea that is supposed to boost creativity in the agency. It’s too bad the pieces are covered with glass, we think it would have been nice for the staff to also play with the LEGO blocks during the meeting. Would you consider this type of office furniture an incentive.

Delta Wing Racing Car

The DeltaWing Racing Car is a radical proposal for a new type of vehicle for the 2012 IndyCar racing series. DeltaWing LLC, of Indianapolis, introduced the concept at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. During the unveiling, Dan Partel, Chief Executive Officer of DeltaWing LLC said of the vehicle; "Today marks a fundamental shift in how race fans and the general public will view all racing cars in the future; this is a game changer. This radical prototype takes open wheel racing to a new level from both an engineering standpoint and the overall spectator experience." By targeting reduced aerodynamic drag and lighter weight, the DeltaWing Racing Car achieves outstanding on-track performance with only half the engine power of its recent predecessors. The unique vehicle design provides optimum and consistent distribution of loading for the Firestone Firehawk tires, which are specifically developed for the dynamic characteristics of the DeltaWing racer.

World’s First Guinness Deep Sea Bar

In a global first, a lucky Belgian competition winner has traveled into the depths of the black stuff in the first ever GUINNESS Deep Sea Bar. Evelyne Gridelet, 30, of Seraing, Belgium, won the incredible trip in the futuristic custom-built GUINNESS submarine as part of the GUINNESS EXPERIENCES competition, held during the global GUINNESS 250 celebrations. Along with her husband, Arnaud Splendore and sister, Virginie Gridelet, Evelyne was flown to Sweden for an unforgettable four-day trip to explore the remote island of Högmarsö in the Stockholm Archipelago. Set against a winter wonderland, the highlight of their adventure, which took place during the last week of January 2010, was travelling to the bottom of the Baltic Sea in the GUINNESS Deep Sea Bar which was designed and modified exclusively exclusively for the trip, and raising a glass to Arthur Guinness. Evelyne said, “This has been an unbelievable trip of a lifetime! Winning the GUINNESS SEA EXPERIENCES has given me the chance to do something totally unique and unforgettable, and I think I’m the first person ever to enjoy a cold glass of GUINNESS on the ocean floor!”
