The ’70s Photos That Made Us Want to Save EarthTwo years after Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency, the new institution sent out 100 photographers to document the nation’s environment writ large. Now, those photos have made it out of the root cellar of the National Archive and onto Flickr Commons, where they are getting a wider viewing than they’ve ever received. The first group of what will become a 15,000-photo set from the Documerica project are now available online to the public. The photographers were charged with three broad goals: “to photograph America’s environmental problems, to document America’s natural and man-made beauty and to photograph the human condition.” |

$10 Million Ponzi Scheme Car Collection Proves Money Can't Buy TasteUtah prosecutors allege Jeffrey Mowen ran a Ponzi-scheme and took over $10 million from investors. Those ill-gotten gains funded a 200-plus vehicle collection now heading to auction. These cars finally prove money, no matter how it's acquired, can't buy taste. Mr. Mowen was captured in Panama last year and US Marshalls seized his assets following the arrest. Those assets included over 200 cars scattered all over the state of Utah. There are some real... umm... interesting... vehicles included. OK, screw that, the cars are just gross. Sure, there's some very nice vintage T-Birds and Panteras, but there's also a slew of vehicles of very questionable taste. Take, for instance, the propeller-powered trike, or perhaps a lifted Cadillac Escalade with an eye-watering paint job, and of course, what collection would be complete without a General Lee? Some real beauts in here folks, lots of questionable motorcycles and trikes, several replicars, lifted golf carts, and hey, even a Chevy Tracker! |
Xbox 360 Gaining USB Storage Support In 2010 UpdateDocumentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010. Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality. |
Old Mercedes-Benz Gullwing Meets New at the Amelia Island Concours d'EleganceBeing a founding sponsor of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance that took place on the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island from March 12-14, 2010, there was no way that Mercedes-Benz would let the opportunity to bring together the original 300 SL Gullwing Coupe with its modern-day successor, the SLS AMG, slip away. The event saw a collection of classic Gullwing models including the original Le Mans-winning 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL which formed the base for the production model that followed in 1954. Over the course of three years, only 1,400 examples of the 300SL Gullwing were built for the road making it one of the most sought after classics of all time. It's grandson, the SLS AMG, was introduced last year and is the first vehicle entirely designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz's high-performance division, AMG. The limited production sports car features gullwing doors and an AMG 6.3-liter, front-mid mounted V8 engine with a maximum output of 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque (U.S.-spec). |
Why 70 Miles Per Hour Is the New 55Left to their own devices, American drivers confronted with an open stretch of interstate highway tend to drive at about 70 miles per hour—whatever the legal speed limit happens to be. That's the finding of an analysis of speed data gathered by TomTom Inc., a marketer of GPS navigation devices. This helps to explain why safety advocates and conservationists are losing the long-running debate over lowering freeway speed limits. The Virginia legislature last week passed legislation raising the speed limit on rural interstate highways to 70 mph from 65 mph. The state's new Republican governor, Bob McDonnell, put boosting the legal speed limit high on his list of priorities, and got action less than three months after taking office. Virginia will become the 34th state to boost interstate speed limits to 70 mph or higher. In big, empty states such as New Mexico, Idaho and Nevada, posted limits on rural interstates can be as high as 75 mph. |
